  • Defines unilateral exophthalmos as an asymmetry of more than 2 mm. Also notes 4 causes of pseudo-exophthalmos: (1) unilateral ocular enlargement; (2) unequal orbital size; (3) extra-ocular muscle abnormalities after trauma or a nerve injury; (4) enophthalmos of contralateral eye; (5) asymmetric palpebral fissures, as might be seen in ptosis, lid retraction, or facial nerve paresis.
