  • Original description and color photos of the Russell sign. [101]
  • Describes a "new" physical sign of bulimia, which is exactly the Russell sign. Photo. (Letters in Mayo Clin Proc 1985;60:50 point out the authors' error.) [102]
  • Reviewed in N Engl J Med 20 April 1989. [104]
  • The pH of sports drinks tested (in England) ranged from 2.38 to 4.46, and contained significant amounts of titratable acid. [105]
  • A 7 year old boy lost dental enamel while taking cholestyramine, similar to that of the classic bulimic pattern. Because exposure to gastric acid destroys enamel in bulimic persons, the authors examined the way the boy took his medication. He took his cholestyramine mixed in Kool-Aid. Kool-Aid has a pH of 2.9 after water is added. Adding cholestyramine decreases the pH to 2.4. [106]
