  • Birds can apparently hear radar in the same manner as humans. One company is equipping aircraft with bird-audible radar to attract the attention of birds from a distance, and hopefully give them time to get out of the aircraft's way. (This is useful because bad things generally happen for all involved when an airplane hits a bird.) [105]
  • The article contains this intriguing sentence: "The anxiolytic potential of radio waves, a notion that reportedly originated in a Russian military plan to sedate whole populations in the West, has aroused less incredulity than one might expect." [106]
  • Describes an open-label trial of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in 6 depressed patients. Two improved significantly, 2 slightly, and 2 did not respond. [107]
  • There was a 1996 or 1997 article from Spain in The Lancet showing that magnetic stimulation of the brain improved depression. [108]
  • An entire book on the subject! Is volume 257 in the series "Progress in Clinical and Biological Research." [110]
  • In this interview with Douglas Trumbull (the man who invented modern cinematic special effects with his work on 2001: A Space Odyssey), Trumbull talks about the next big leap in immersive tachnology:
We're not that far from being able to plant images, memories, and emotional states directly into the brain. I think that the whole business of stereophonic sound and virtual reality glasses are a transitory state. And I've had it confirmed to me -- just in the last month -- that very powerful work is going on this direction right now. I visited a scientist who had a helmet with magnetic fields controlled by computer sequences that could profoundly affect your mood and your perceptions.

  • Cites an extensive literature showing that transcranial magnetic stimulation can be used to disrupt specific cortical functions, such as visual information processing. [115]
  • Otoacoustic emission now serves as a cost-effective screening procedure for neonatal hearing loss. [114]
  • In 1893, d'Arsonval discovered that a magnetic field oscillating at between 10 and 100 hertz can be perceived by humans as an intensely flashing light. This phenomenon is known as the magnetophosphene. [117]
  • Reports the audibility of frequencies up to 26,000 Hz (the upper limit of hearing in young humans is generally accepted at 20,000 Hz). My French is not good enough to understand how this was demonstrated. [119]
  • Letter about the article above. [121]
  • In vitro tests found that "low-level electromagnetic fields present in some North American homes today" can diminish or nullify tamoxifen's action. Cites the journal Bioelectromagnetics 18(8). [124]
