Streptococcus bovis bacteremia
    Differential Diagnosis[Top] [Nav]
colonic neoplasm or other gastrointestinal malignancy, benign conditions associated with lost bowel-wall integrity
Discussion -- not available online[Top] [Nav]
    Notes[Top] [Nav]
*As noted below, Clostridium septicum infection is associated with colonic dis-integrity in a manner similar to Strep. bovis bacteremia.
    Update Comments[Top] [Nav]
  • Another Streptococcus species that takes advantage of colonic dis-integrity. [103]
  • Infections in colon cancer. [104]
  • Clostridial infection in a patient with adenocarcinoma of the colon. [106]
  • Another Clostridium-in-colon-cancer case. The clinician discussant noted: "The association between infection with C. septicum and an underlying malignant tumor is reminiscent of that between Strep. bovis bacteremia and intestinal cancers.... The association with gastrointestinal cancers is so striking that the finding of bacteremic Strep. bovis infection or spontaneous clostridial myonecrosis should trigger a search for a malignant tumor." The pathologist remarked: "The underlying theme in cases of spontaneous myonecrosis due to C. septicum is loss of mucosal integrity, which provides a portal of entry for bacteria." [107]
