  • JF Kurtze described the effects of the Uhthoff phenomenon in multiple sclerosis as "exceedingly transient, not very predictable and certainly not pathognomonic." He also mentions that Putnam's 1939 dictum "Go south, young multiple sclerotic," is wrong because of the effect of heat on MS patients. [101]
  • Eating and smoking can also precipitate symptoms for a brief period. Whether this is due to the Uhthoff phenomenon is unclear. Some patients with spino-cerebellar ataxia will also worsen after smoking. [102]
